We asked Randall Munroe, the genius behind the web-comic XKCD, to create a few comics just for our blog. We didn’t give him much direction other than to riff on topics about building a smarter planet, similar to what he’s done in the past on green energy. As a comedian, I’ll particularly thrilled to have this celeb comic strip artist contribute. Wit has been part of our character at IBM for a long time, and our smarter planet blog team is a fan of using humor to tell stories, as you may have seen in the previous post.

My second time here two(sic),* xkcd Random is the best waste of time since Gary Larson, whom I’ve greatly missed.
* Comma after the close parens in this case, right?
But random? Not too** sure. Linked here after a mad science-squirrel-feeder strip hit, then found Larsonesque cloven (Cow?) prints in the snow ’round my bird feeder this AM. Perhaps the “random” button gets me to a new, far stranger ‘Far Side’.
Now a squirrel at my bird feeder is looking at me strangely. Where can I get an auto-targeting kilowatt laser?
** See, I know the spelling. Just needed a straw man for a close parens ref. Seemed apropos.

I clicked random a bunch too, too bad it never brought me here. I forgot how to capitalist xkcd so I went to ‘about’ and, well, a few clicks later, here I am.
So, just out of curiosity, when can we expect the Maple sap taps to be up and operational? I heard something about it during the transit pod speech. Or was that in my head? Is this in my head?
Ahhh! It’s in my head!
Props to anyone who know what ‘Nevets’ means.

It’s finally paid off!

Love you too Aemyn, my chosen one :]

Hehe, only a handful of ‘chosen ones’ get transported here when they click the Random button.
The odds would be like 1 in 500 i think.
Anyways, hello to any of you chosen peoples, and those who just got sent the link by a chosen one.
Peace.

p.s. Hai Eden, love you (:

Hmmm. I got here by clicking a link in the xkcd faq, instead of using the ‘random’ button.
Should I feel smugly superior to the rest of you, because it was a deliberate action on my part (instead of random)? Or should I feel inadequate as I am not participating in the transcendent serendipity delivered by the ‘random’ button?

Paul, to your question about what the author thinks about the comments to this post becoming a huge string of people killing time on xkcd… I do find that – and the resulting comments – the source of great amusement. :)
Posted by: Adam Christensen
10:28 am
Yup, random clicker in the small hours of the morning. How obtuse we should all end up together for the same purpose – procrastination and distraction. My hat’s off to everyone at XKCD for never letting me sleep on time anymore :)

I wonder what the author of this blog thinks of the fact that this “comments” section has turned into a huge string of people who were killing time and pressing the “random” button on xkcd… which, by the way, also applies to me.
Also, I lost the game. Good work Mike.

Random Man!
Makes sense since Randall probably wants us to see this site. Or what it is trying to say.
Or just for the strip.
Or probably to say that the chances of life happening on a planet is random – like ours…

12:12 am
I was not entirely conscious when i arrived, so spent several minutes searching the previous page to discover how i got here…
Thanks to my reading, I now know the answer! The awesomeness of the random button.

I too got here via the random button. And I almost went back to hit it again, but was afraid I would never find this page again. Glad I stuck around. Though it’s just not the same with no alt-text – it’s a bit unnerving. Nice to feel so unified with other random clickers, though. Like we’re all one big xkcd family.

Random as well… It’s almost 5 A.M.
Hey, that reminds me of comic #361*!
Also, Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Building-a-Smarter-Planet-xkcd-random-clickers/136035376006?ref=search
*I actually had to go to unnecessary lengths just to find that one, because I wasn’t quite sure which it was. And now I’ve realized that 3 A.M. was mentioned in the comic, not 5. Whoops.
** I really love reading xkcd late at night/early morning.

yup, random. And it is. Random, I mean. Makes me wonder if the blog actually exists or not. Like, am I an idiot for posting to a blog that doesn’t exist, or am I just reading FAR too much into it in thinking that it doesn’t exist? Nevermind. I think we can all agree that I’m an idiot after all that.

No Aaron, it is alt text wheter you like it or not. nothing you can do or say will change that.

7:51 am
I find the lack of distinction between alt-text and title attribute disturbing.
Alt text is what is shown when the image is not available. An ALTERNATIVE to the image if you will.
The title attribute is what is shown when you hover over something.
But yeah, we’re all now jerks. Taking focus away from a good cause with your complaining (and my pedantry).
