I agree the costs of healthcare in the U.S is very high. This has lead to a huge demand in medical tourism with not only more companies offering these services but physicians and surgeons in other countries capitalizing in on the strong demand.

More innovation regarding patient health records and privacy needs to be implemented.

Regards,

Michael

Healthcare systems like the PCHC are certainly worth looking at closely, both in terms of the populations served, and the outcomes they have achieved. Many researchers are also working with similar clinics, such as Federally Qualified Health Centers. You may also be interested to learn more about the work that CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) is doing with the Community Health Data Initiative (CHDI) and population health. You can read about this at the CHDI webpage: http://www.hhs.gov/open/discussion/chdi.html

IBM is on the right track with this. I am an Adult NP who works with a large, non-profit clinic in Murfreesboro, TN. Our Clinic--Primary Care & Hope Clinic (PCHC)-would be an ideal institution to "test drive" any solutions, and this is why:
1. PCHC cares for every population imaginable--from uninsured, low-income state insurance, privately insured, Medicare/Medicaid, undocumented residents and newborns to the elderly--all under one roof & one system.
2. Murfreesboro has an easily captured, diverse, and accessible population through our Clinic
3. Murfreesboro has (1) Health Dept, (2) med-sized hospitals, (1) point of accesss (PCHC) for the uninsured/low-income, (1) concentrated medical community for referral/consultation interaction
4. The community is the right size & right mix to thoroughly test-drive any comprehensive system, which could be applied nationally.Any glitches would be discovered quickly & easily.
5. Would be a great test site for the South, detecting any cultural or regional patterns that are might emerge in the South.
6. PCHC works with and/or employs all types of providers (MD,NP,PA) and makes referrals across all spectrums (home health, etc.).

As an NP of 30 years, this is long overdue and a company of IBM's stature and abilities is what is needed to "marry" business and medicine and the consumer. We are all cheering you on and wish you the best. Please let us know if you need any help in any way! Sincerely,
