A record number of applicants, reviewed and screened down to 5 finalists, mentored and judged by experts, including Bob Metcalfe, inventor of Ethernet, a People’s Vote that allowed live stream viewers to pick their favorite startup from their laptops, and a skyped-in visit from Scott Case, head of StartupAmerica, defines the energy of entrepreneurship at this year’s IBM SmartCamp in Austin. And the winners are…
The Winners Are
SecureWaters was named winner of IBM SmartCamp Austin, and will attend the SmartCamp World Finals at the end of the year. SecureWaters commercializes patented technology that monitors, detects and identifies toxins in surface water. The Company sells a smarter, real-time early warning electronic monitor and alarm system, the AquaSentinel, which automatically and continuously tests for toxins in source surface waters.
Waldo Health won the online People’s Vote Award. Waldo Health has developed and launched a unique tablet-based patient monitoring service that delivers a smarter, more powerful solution for the important and growing field of home telehealth. Designed specifically for individuals with chronic disease, Waldo is the home health companion that connects patients to clinicians (doctors, nurses, caregivers).
Tactical Information Systems won the Chamber of Commerce Award. The Fulbright Legal Services Award – $3,500 in legal services – went to Stormpulse. Judge Bob Metcalfe (who is also professor of innovation at University of Texas) gave a Mentorship Award – one week of mentoring with him through the rest of the year – to ALL 5 companies. And the Austin Technology Incubator offered them all office space for the year.
In the end Bob Metcalfe said it best: All the finalists and applicants are winners because they are pushing forward with their visions, their passions. They are taking the chance to take the innovation plunge to the level of action. That courage is what differentiates winners from the rest.
