Each year, IBM Research chooses five digital innovations that will likely transform elements of modern life within five years. It’s an exercise designed to challenge IBM scientists and engineers and engage the general public in imagining the possible.

This year’s predictions will be announced on Monday, Dec. 17 on this blog. We’ll post links to videos and in-depth blog posts about each of the innovations by IBM brainiacs. Also, we’ll invite visitors to vote for their favorite prediction. The results will be announced Dec. 21.

The IBM 5 in 5 predictions are based on assessments of the state of technology combined with market and social trends. So they’re more than a view of what’s technologically possible. Also, we try to make them entertaining.

So please come back and join the fun on Monday. And join the Twitter conversation at #ibm5in5

Oh, and by the way, we’re pretty good at prognosticating. A number of our past predictions have already come true. Consider this one from 2007:

Your cell phone will be your wallet, your ticket broker, your concierge, your bank, your shopping buddy, and more

We’re there today.

Weak example in wording, choice and statistical relevancy in my opinion. It’s a broad vague definition which often is only partially true and the “and more” bit is ludicrous in a prediction (does the English term “snake oil” apply ?). Probably today’s horoscope is as accurate (not sure since I never read them) :-) Here in the Mediterranean we invented the same thing a while ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sibyl :-)

I personally do not think this is a technical prediction in 2007 “Your cell phone will be your wallet, your ticket broker, your concierge, your bank, your shopping buddy, and more”. They had been implemented in Japan, say a decade ago.

I predict that our body will be embedded chip, maybe on our hand, we can regard it as our cell phone, it can be our wallet, our ticket broker, our concierge, our bank, our shopping buddy, and more. So at that time, we don’t need to bring cellphone.

Rather prescient for a 2007 prediction!
Looking forward to this year’s list.
Crystal ball…When will the majority of vending machines be able to accept smartphones?
