IBM researcher Ton Engbersen believes scientists very soon will be able to build a computer that is comparable in complexity to the human brain. But that is only half the story. He also wants to teach such a machine to learn like the brain as well. And that is where it gets really interesting.

Ton is referring to cognitive computing – the ability of machines to sense, reason, learn, and, in some ways, think. Learning is a key element. These computers will not be based on programs that predetermine every answer or action needed to perform a task; rather, they will be trained with algorithms and through interactions with data and humans.

The coming era of cognitive computing will be the primary focus on Sept. 1 when IBM Research – Zurich conducts a colloquium called, “The New Era of Learning Machines.”

To learn more about the new era, you can download a free chapter of Smart Machines: IBM’s Watson and the Era of Cognitive Computing, a new book by IBM Research Dir. John E. Kelly III.

Why do we need cognitive computing? Well, Big Data growth is accelerating as more of the world’s activity is expressed digitally and increasing in volume, speed and uncertainty. Since most data now comes in unstructured forms such as video, images, symbols and natural language, a new computing model is needed in order to make sense of it all.

To help push the envelope on machine learning, Ton has recruited two budding and enthusiastic PhD students in computer science, Adela-Diana Almasi from Romania and Stanislaw Wozniak from Poland (no relation to the Apple co-founder).  The two were participants in IBM Research’s internship program and are now in the pre-doctoral research program.

Stanislaw Wozniak, IBM Research Intern

Stanislaw Wozniak, IBM Researcher

Stanislaw explains that their research fits between neuromorphic computing and its biological counter-discipline, computational neuroscience: “They are both very multi-dimensional fields often causing confusion due to all of the ‘brain talk’, but regardless, our research will take the best of both worlds ”

Adela-Diana Almasi, IBM Research Intern

Adela-Diana agrees: “We are trying build a machine learning algorithm that is more biologically-inspired than the ones that are currently used, but we need to find just the right level of abstraction so that it’s computationally feasible.”

Finding the right balance is particularly challenging ,since the brain is not even fully understood at a biological level. “It’s like trying to build a puzzle, when you don’t know what the picture is and you are blind folded,” she says. “As I consider this challenge, I become less of a computer scientist and more of a philosopher.”

Typically, a lot of human effort is required to train computers. The two interns are working on a system that, like the brain, learns primarily from experience—in the computer’s case, from encounters with data. Take for example weather prediction. This kind of learning system will make predictions about the weather based on historical information and sensor readings; then, as it learns from its mistakes, it will continually get better at predicting.

The two tried a new approach to optical character recognition (OCR) based on their concept. OCR is one of the most common uses of machine learning. They developed an algorithm and assembled a large-scale neural network using off-the shelf graphics cards of the type found in high-end gaming PCs. While most OCR systems are very narrowly focused, they wanted to create one that operated more like the brain, with more of a general-purpose intelligence.

While they logged some early successes, when they tried the system out on a large amount of data, the accuracy rate plummeted. “It’s a lot harder than it looks, says Stanislaw.  “It turned out we need to focus more on a proof of concept before the implementation. “

Now the team is starting to develop a different approach to the same problem—taking their inspiration from the way neurons work in the human brain. This will require a new learning algorithm, so, in a sense, they’re back to square one.

The good news is, as pre-docs, the team has three years before they graduate. The bad news is that Big Data is growing exponentially every day and the need for such a learning system grows with it.

Adela-Diana, who often confers with her grandmother, a biology teacher in Romania, remains confident. She says: “Nature has provided us with a very challenging riddle to solve, but with trial, error and some luck, we will crack it.”

%first_paragraphK&N has recently released air filter part number 33-2444 for 2010 Cadillac SRX drivers with both the 3. This performance air filter is designed to provide both engines with more power and torque while providing outstanding engine protection. This nearly square panel style air filter has a step and ridge along the outer edges that were put in place to create a proper sealing surface when matched with the Cadillac SRX air box.

As there is no charge involved and there is no limit to the number of SMS that you can send, it has gained immense popularity among the people who travel frequently and those with relatives abroad. SMS websites are very useful for those having relatives and friends abroad. More than this, there are many free SMS websites where you can register and send SMS for free. It is not economically feasible for everyone to make calls every day or send SMS from mobile phones to the loved ones living far away. There are many people traveling very frequently on business and these SMS websites serves as a good way to communicate with the family back home.

This means that it perfectly well meets all your lighting needs. The L-948 Solar Rechargeable 2-N-1 LED Shed Light has an illuminated LED power switch to show you where the on/off switch is if you are in the dark. The wall mounted base is what holds and charges the solar shed light. It is possible to detach the light in case you decide to use a hand held utility light.

It was not late before the marketing industry woke up to the potential of SMS to feel the pulse of the viewer or customer. Short code SMS is a messaging service which involves a much shorter 5 or 6-digit code. However since mobile connections have numbers 10 digits long and are usually hard to remember short code SMS was started.

Lag behind the others now and then continue my experience, I hope we can help save point of time and money. I belong to the kind of skin care products can not be broken one day, so although still a little something in hand, but ran out today could not help it lost a lot of things, alas, in moderation of Qiana All the above spent on these bottles and cans.

L-trans-epoxysuccinyl peptide is a potent inhibitor specific for cathepsin B in vitro (IC50= 2. L-trans-epoxysuccinyl-leucylamido (4-guanidino)butane (E-64) rapidly in activates the cysteine proteinases cathepsins B, H and L and papain. 24 nM for rat liver cathepsin B) and in vivo.

N-acetyl-DL-methionine, like the DL-hy-droxy analogue of methionine,1 has a slower absorption velocity than DL-methio-nine, and this has been suggested as one possible explanation for why DL-hy-droxy methionine is less efficacious than DL-methionine when fed in crystalline amino acid diets but not when fed as a supplement to intact protein diets.

Adding a DVD drive, SATA installations and RAM is as easy as booting your own computer. The built is quite sturdy for longer performance yet it is actually lightweight for its capacity at 17 pounds. Its solid performance is definitely underneath that midget case. The connections for all pluggable devices are also friendlier than most brands. Setting up HP Micro G7 n40l NHP US SVR is foolproof and does not require a computer genius to do.

Since the DCS-930L comes with a built-in microphone, it can be seen and heard that everything is well at home. Peace of mind is obtained by keeping an eye on the kids, pets, home or office from almost anywhere by simply logging on to the mydlink website and selecting the camera. As a mydlink-enabled device, the DCS-930L can be accessed anytime, anywhere there is Internet access.

Thus users do not have to worry about the spending extra money on mobile charges and the connection lies beneath your fingertips. Having kept all the things in mind, some SMS website service providers have started new plans to spend with unconstrained character to be delivered in a single message. Moreover, with the enormous popularity, it has grabbed the attention of youngsters of today who are keen for a fast and cost effective ways to stay in touch with the people they know, and the everyday usage has made the trend of the new era of connection, hence becoming an important part of everybody’s life.%

These signs or signs and symptoms are a reaction of the entire body
on the notion that the human body is being attacked by these
mold spores that generate the allergy. Laddertray is
most widely used in the construction of commercial
construction projects and light industrial applications. IMO a properly adjusted clutch should be close to fully
engaged about halfway through it’s range of motion off
the floor.

A motivating discussion is worth comment. There’s no doubt that that you
need to write more about this subject, it might not be a taboo subject but generally folks
don’t speak about such issues. To the next! Best wishes!!

Tap into people’s lives have been, all the time to use the tap, tap of the
quality related to people’s health, the tap selection is essential, how to select the
tap it. The moment I stepped off the aeroplane in Iquitos it felt as
if I had been hit by bolt of energy. To break into such a safe, if a thief knows where
the bolts are located on the door, he just has to drill
through and hammer on the bolts to make them recede.

Hmm, so then we would have to raise computers instead of merely setting them up and we would have computer nannies instead of techs?
