With 46 years of age and after 10 years in GBS and ITS in different managing positions I decided to take a full year break.
Actually not a break because of “something” more a break to realize personal projects I would not be able to realize on the job.
And the timing end of last year was just perfect. After six exciting years in the emerging markets I was looking for a new job challenge, the batteries were quite empty and I felt like doing something special. And then I experienced one of these key moments, when a friend of mine from IBM AP told me about his great sabatical time a couple years ago and my sabatical stone began to roll. It took me about 1 months to decide. At this place I want to express my special thanks to my wife. Without the total and 100% support of the family I would not be able to realize such a time out. Another thanks belongs to IBM who made the whole thing possible. Of course it is a win-win situation but nevertheless it is not a mather of course and I attract attention and amazement when I talk to NonIBMers about it.
When planning the sabatical the “issue” I had. There were too many ideas and projects and it took me quite a while to prioritize my projects. For the analysts among you I defined 4 key criterias: 1) Affordable, 2) Not feasible “on the job” 3) High Fun Factor 4) High Learning Factor.
Now I have to forewarn you if you intend to read more, especially following posts ^^ You should have a strong personality to read the non-business-like, most fun and exciting content. I warned you ^^
I prioritized the following projects:
1) Fly to Thailand and study thai (3 months)
2) Help to restore an old temple in thailand (several weeks)
3) Trecking in Laos and North Thailand
4) Learn the skill “Dry masonry wall” (several weeks, will explain later)
5) Around the world trip with my wife (several months)
6) Joker Project
to be continued …
