The IBM InterConnect conference kicked off earlier this week in Singapore with a keynote presentation to 2,500 attendees from IBM chairman and chief executive Ginni Rometty. The presentation focused on what it means to be a smart enterprise and the need to look beyond simply reducing costs. Ms. Rometty explained how big data constitutes a new natural resource and how smart enterprises are applying analytics to improve decision making. Data is being generated at an ever-increasing rate by interconnected devices, or the Internet of Things, as well as the confluence of mobile, social and cloud technologies. And while technology has an important role, the engaged employee is the most important asset of the enterprise and will ultimately drive the client experience and business results.

I attended the mobile keynote session, titled “Build Your Mobile Enterprise Agenda with IBM MobileFirst.” At the session, Marie Wieck, the general manager of application and integration middleware, and Kristen Lauria, vice president of marketing for IBM MobileFirst, discussed the benefits, challenges and best practices of becoming a mobile enterprise. The presentation referenced the recently published IBM Institute for Business Value study on mobile enterprise that I blogged about last week. Miku Jha, product manager for IBM MobileFirst, demoed an innovative retail shopping application that was developed using IBM Worklight. Aniruddha Paul, CIO of ING Vsaya Bank, presented on the increasing use of mobile banking services.

IBM defines mobile as business in motion, so the IBM MobileFirst portfolio continues to expand to meet the growing needs of clients worldwide. This portfolio includes the following:

  • IBM Worklight 6.1 – Enhanced
  • IBM Mobile Quality Assurance Open Beta – New!
  • IBM Rational Test Workbench 8.51 – Enhanced
  • IBM UrbanCode Deploy plug-in for Worklight – Enhanced
  • IBM SmartCloud Application Performance Management 7.7
  • Xtify digital marketing – New!
  • The Now Factory analytics – New!
  • IBM Tealeaf 8.8 and IBM Websphere Commerce – Enhanced
  • IBM Maximo Anywhere – Enhanced
  • IBM Connections 4.5 – Enhanced
  • IBM Cloud Mobile Managed Services – Enhanced

Additional keynote sessions at InterConnect covered big data and analytics, smarter commerce, security intelligence, social business and smarter workforce, expert integrated systems and DevOps. Business best practices and technology roadmap sessions provided in-depth presentations for each of the keynote topics. Finally, the solution center featured the latest technology and cutting-edge solutions offered by IBM and business partners as well as the opportunity to connect with subject-matter experts in a relaxed one-on-one setting.

In addition to meeting with clients and partners, I co-presented a session titled “Institute a Mobile First IT Infrastructure” along with Vijay Dheap, the global solutions manager of big data security intelligence and mobile security. A copy of our presentation is available on SlideShare.

For those not able to attend InterConnect in person, insights from conference attendees and subject matter experts can be found on the following social media sites:

The most valuable insight I gained from the conference was from success stories such as how PSA Singapore is adopting smart technology to increase efficiency, client satisfaction and expanding operations to meet growing cargo shipping needs.  I invite you to share your insights by commenting below.
